How do you calculate asphalt millings for a driveway?

Find the volume in cubic yards, then turn it into tons with a weight per yard. Millings are sold by the ton, so the weight figure matters as much as the measurements.

Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324
Tons = cubic yards × 1.62 (FHWA low end, 120 lb/ft³) to 1.89 (high end, 140 lb/ft³)

The 324 is 12 in per ft × 27 ft³ per yd³. The weight range comes from the Federal Highway Administration’s user guidelines for reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), which report that “the unit weight of milled or processed RAP has been found to range from 1940 to 2300 kg/m3 (120 to 140 lb/ft3)”. Multiplying by 27 and dividing by 2,000 gives 1.62 to 1.89 short tons per cubic yard.

Why the calculator defaults to the low end. A supplier’s actual weight depends on the gradation, how much binder is left and how wet the pile is. The low end gives the smaller order; the high-end option shows the top of the range. If your supplier quotes a weight per yard, use theirs, or convert their quote with the tons to cubic yards converter.

Worked example: 12 × 60 ft driveway, 4 in of millings

  • Volume: 12 × 60 × 4 ÷ 324 = 8.89 yd³ (240 ft³, 6.80 m³)
  • Low end: 8.89 × 1.62 = 14.4 tons; with 10% extra 15.84 tons
  • High end: 8.89 × 1.89 = 16.8 tons; with 10% extra 18.48 tons

Ordering about 16 to 18.5 tons covers the FHWA range plus an allowance. Ask whether the supplier sells by the scale ticket or by the truckload, and how many tons their truck carries.

How many tons of millings for common driveway sizes?

The table covers common driveway sizes. Every figure is computed with the site’s calculation library from the FHWA range; the “order” columns add 10% for compaction and an uneven subgrade (a rule of thumb, not a published standard).

Driveway Depth (in) Yd³ Tons at 1.62 Tons at 1.89 Order +10% at 1.62 Order +10% at 1.89
10 × 50 ft 4 6.17 10.0 11.67 11.0 12.83
10 × 100 ft 3 9.26 15.0 17.5 16.5 19.25
12 × 60 ft 4 8.89 14.4 16.8 15.84 18.48
12 × 60 ft 6 13.33 21.6 25.2 23.76 27.72
12 × 100 ft 4 14.81 24.0 28.0 26.4 30.8
12 × 200 ft 4 29.63 48.0 56.0 52.8 61.6
20 × 40 ft 4 9.88 16.0 18.67 17.6 20.53
24 × 40 ft (two-car pad) 4 11.85 19.2 22.4 21.12 24.64

How much does a ton of asphalt millings cover?

At 4 in deep, one ton covers about 50 ft² at the low-end weight and 43 ft² at the high end. Coverage per ton = 324 ÷ depth (in) ÷ tons per yd³.

Depth ft² per yd³ ft² per ton at 1.62 ft² per ton at 1.89 lb per ft² at 120 lb/ft³ lb per ft² at 140 lb/ft³
2 in 162 100 85.7 20 23.3
3 in 108 66.7 57.1 30 35
4 in 81 50 42.9 40 46.7
6 in 54 33.3 28.6 60 70

To turn coverage into an order, divide your area by the figure for your depth. A 1,000 ft² parking area at 4 in needs 1,000 ÷ 50 = 20 tons at the low end, or 1,000 ÷ 42.9 ≈ 23.3 tons at the high end, before any allowance.

How deep should asphalt millings be?

There is no published national depth for a residential millings driveway, so this page does not give one as a rule. The tables use 4 in as a common starting point and show 3 and 6 in for comparison. Soft or wet soil, heavy trucks and frost all argue for more depth, or for a stone base under the millings.

The FHWA guidelines note that “RAP by itself may exhibit a somewhat lower bearing capacity than conventional granular aggregate bases,” and that blending granular RAP with suitable materials is necessary to reach the bearing strengths a road base needs. In the same document, mixes with 40 percent RAP produced CBR values above 150 after a week. For a driveway that carries delivery trucks, ask the supplier whether they sell a RAP-and-stone blend, or put millings over a compacted crusher run base.

Every extra inch on a 12 × 60 ft driveway adds 2.22 yd³, about 3.6 to 4.2 tons. Price two depths in the calculator before you decide.

Asphalt millings vs gravel: which is better?

Neither is better everywhere. Millings and gravel solve different problems, and the choice comes down to load, drainage and maintenance.

Asphalt millings (RAP) Crushed stone / gravel
Weight per yd³ (this site) 1.62 to 1.89 tons (FHWA 120 to 140 lb/ft³) about 1.6 tons crusher run, 1.35 #57 (typical, ask supplier)
Bearing capacity FHWA: may be somewhat lower than conventional granular base on its own Graded crushed stone is the conventional base material
Surface Dark, can bind together as it ages; less dust Lighter, loose stones can migrate and rut
Drainage Fines and binder slow drainage Washed stone drains freely; crusher run less so
Regrading Harder once bound Easy to rake and top up
Pricing By the ton; ask locally By the ton or yard; ask locally

A common approach is a compacted stone base for strength with millings on top for the surface. The driveway gravel calculator sizes the stone layer, and the gravel driveway cost page explains how to build a quote around it.

How do you compact asphalt millings?

Spread millings in lifts and compact each lift with a vibratory roller or a heavy plate. A light spray of water can help. The FHWA guidelines report maximum dry densities for RAP of 100 to 125 lb/ft³ in compaction tests and moisture contents in stockpiles of up to 5 percent or higher, and as high as 7 to 8 percent after long wet spells.

Two practical points follow:

  • Wet millings weigh more. A load weighed after rain carries water you are paying for by the ton. At 5% moisture, a 15-ton load holds about 0.71 tons of water (15 × 5 ÷ 105).
  • Loose and compacted volumes differ. The 10% allowance in the tables is a starting point; a soft subgrade or a thick lift may need more. Measure after the first load before ordering the rest.

Grade the surface with a crown or cross-slope so water runs off, and keep the edges from crumbling with a firm shoulder of soil or stone.

Worked example (metric): 3 × 15 m driveway, 100 mm deep

  • Volume: 3 × 15 × 0.1 = 4.5 m³ (5.89 yd³)
  • Low end, 120 lb/ft³ ≈ 1,922 kg/m³: 4.5 × 1.922 = 8.65 tonnes
  • High end, 140 lb/ft³ ≈ 2,243 kg/m³: 4.5 × 2.243 = 10.09 tonnes
  • With 10% extra: about 9.5 to 11.1 tonnes

FHWA rounds the same range to 1,940 to 2,300 kg/m³; the calculator converts from the lb/ft³ figures, so its metric results are a few percent lower at the top end.

What does a millings driveway cost?

This page does not quote a national price, because millings prices depend on local paving activity, haul distance and the supplier’s stockpile. Build your own estimate from three inputs:

  1. Tons needed. From the calculator, including your allowance.
  2. Price per ton at the yard, from a quote. Enter it in the calculator’s price field to get the material total.
  3. Delivery and spreading. Many suppliers charge per truck or per mile, and some have a minimum load. Spreading and rolling are often a separate line from a grading contractor.

Ask each supplier the same questions so quotes compare: price per ton or per yard, the weight they use per yard, delivered or picked up, truck capacity, whether the material is screened, and whether it contains other debris. A quote per yard can be converted to per ton with the tons to cubic yards converter.

What drives the price up: a long haul, a small order that falls under a truck minimum, screened or graded material, a blended RAP-and-stone product, and the base work under the millings. What drives it down: picking up yourself, a supplier with surplus stock, and ordering a full truck.

If you are weighing a hot-mix asphalt surface instead, the asphalt calculator gives the tons of new mix for the same area.

Common millings mistakes

  • Using a gravel weight for millings. The FHWA range of 1.62 to 1.89 t/yd³ sits close to crusher run, but your supplier’s figure may not; ask.
  • Skipping the base on soft ground. Millings alone on clay can rut under trucks.
  • Ordering by area without depth. Tons per square foot double when depth doubles.
  • Forgetting moisture. Wet loads weigh more by the ton.
  • No allowance for compaction. Order about 10% extra, then check after the first load.

Check with your county or town before using millings near wells, streams or in a regulated area; some jurisdictions have rules on recycled asphalt placement.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many tons of asphalt millings do I need for a driveway?

A 12 × 60 ft driveway at 4 in deep is 8.89 yd³, which is 14.4 tons at FHWA's low-end 120 lb/ft³ or 16.8 tons at 140 lb/ft³. With 10% extra, order 15.84 to 18.48 tons. Multiply area × depth ÷ 324 × 1.62 to 1.89 for any size.

How much area does a ton of asphalt millings cover?

At 4 in deep, one ton covers about 50 ft² at 120 lb/ft³ or 42.9 ft² at 140 lb/ft³. At 3 in it covers 66.7 to 57.1 ft², and at 6 in 33.3 to 28.6 ft². Divide 324 by depth in inches and by tons per yd³.

How much does a cubic yard of asphalt millings weigh?

About 3,240 to 3,780 lb, or 1.62 to 1.89 short tons. The FHWA reports a unit weight of 120 to 140 lb/ft³ for milled or processed RAP; multiply by 27 ft³ per yd³. Wet stockpiles weigh more, so ask the supplier for their figure.

How deep should asphalt millings be for a driveway?

There is no published national depth for millings driveways. This page's examples use 4 in as a starting point; soft soil and heavy trucks call for more. FHWA notes RAP alone can have lower bearing capacity than conventional granular base, so ask your supplier or local DOT district.

Are asphalt millings better than gravel?

Not always. FHWA notes that RAP on its own may have somewhat lower bearing capacity than conventional granular aggregate base, and blending with other aggregate is used to reach the required strength. Millings hold dust down and can bind together; gravel drains and regrades more easily.

How many tons of millings for a 20×40 driveway?

A 20 × 40 ft driveway is 800 ft². At 4 in deep that is 9.88 yd³, or 16 tons at 1.62 t/yd³ and 18.67 tons at 1.89 t/yd³. With 10% extra order 17.6 to 20.53 tons.

Do asphalt millings need to be compacted?

Yes. Spread in lifts and compact with a roller or plate, ideally slightly moist. FHWA reports maximum dry densities for compacted RAP of 100 to 125 lb/ft³ in laboratory tests, so a ton of compacted millings is about 1.35 to 1.69 tons per yd³ of compacted volume.

How many tonnes of millings per square metre?

At 100 mm deep, each m² needs 0.1 m³, about 0.19 to 0.22 tonnes using FHWA's 120 to 140 lb/ft³ range (about 1,922 to 2,243 kg/m³). A 3 × 15 m driveway at 100 mm is 4.5 m³, or 8.65 to 10.09 tonnes.
