How Many Bags of Concrete Are on a Pallet?

A pallet holds 42 bags of 80 lb concrete, 56 bags of 60 lb or 80 bags of 40 lb, per Quikrete's and Sakrete's (Oldcastle APG) product pages. The 80 lb and 60 lb pallets both carry 3,360 lb (1,524 kg) of mix and make 25.2 ft³, about 0.93 cubic yard, of concrete.

Yields (QUIKRETE Concrete Mix data sheet): 90 lb = 0.675 ft³, 80 lb = 0.60 ft³, 60 lb = 0.45 ft³, 50 lb = 0.375 ft³, 40 lb = 0.30 ft³. Bags are rounded up.

Key numbers

  • 80 lb bags: 42 per pallet (Quikrete Concrete Mix No. 1101; Sakrete High-Strength 80 lb)
  • 60 lb bags: 56 per pallet; 40 lb bags: 80 per pallet
  • Net weight: 3,360 lb (1.68 US tons, 1,524 kg) for 80 or 60 lb pallets, before the pallet itself
  • Yield: one 80 lb pallet = 42 × 0.60 ft³ = 25.2 ft³ (0.93 yd³, 0.71 m³)
  • One cubic yard takes 45 bags of 80 lb: one full pallet plus 3 bags

How many bags of concrete are on a pallet?

A standard pallet of bagged concrete holds 42 bags of 80 lb, 56 bags of 60 lb or 80 bags of 40 lb. Quikrete and Sakrete use the same counts for the same bag size, so the totals in this guide apply to either brand’s regular concrete mix.

Product (bag size) Bags per pallet Net mix weight (lb) Net weight (kg) Concrete made (ft³) (yd³) (m³)
QUIKRETE Concrete Mix, 80 lb 42 3,360 1,524 25.2 0.93 0.71
QUIKRETE Concrete Mix, 60 lb 56 3,360 1,524 25.2 0.93 0.71
QUIKRETE Concrete Mix, 40 lb 80 3,200 1,451 24.0 0.89 0.68
Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix, 80 lb 42 3,360 1,524 25.2 0.93 0.71
Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix, 60 lb 56 3,360 1,524 25.2 0.93 0.71
Sakrete Concrete Mix, 40 lb 80 3,200 1,451 24.0 0.89 0.68
QUIKRETE Fast-Setting Concrete Mix, 50 lb 64 3,200 1,451 not computed

Pallet counts are from Quikrete’s product pages and Oldcastle APG’s Sakrete listings (Sakrete is an Oldcastle APG brand). Volumes multiply the count by each bag’s data-sheet yield: 0.60 ft³ per 80 lb bag, 0.45 per 60 lb and 0.30 per 40 lb, for both Quikrete Concrete Mix and Sakrete High-Strength. The Sakrete 40 lb row assumes the 0.30 ft³ yield from the High-Strength sheet, since its listing gives none. The fast-setting row has no volume because we have not verified that product’s yield. Weights are the bags only; the wooden pallet and wrap are extra.

A store may sell part pallets or stack its own count for delivery, so confirm the count on your order. The manufacturer’s figure is what a full factory pallet carries.

How much does a pallet of concrete weigh?

The mix on a full pallet of 80 lb or 60 lb bags weighs 3,360 lb (1.68 US tons, 1,524 kg); a 40 lb or 50 lb pallet carries 3,200 lb (1.6 US tons, 1,451 kg). It is simple arithmetic, bags × bag weight, and it is why the 80 and 60 lb pallets carry the same load.

Bag size lb (kg) per bag Bags per pallet Mix per pallet (lb) US tons kg
80 lb 80 (36.3) 42 3,360 1.68 1,524
60 lb 60 (27.2) 56 3,360 1.68 1,524
50 lb 50 (22.7) 64 3,200 1.60 1,451
40 lb 40 (18.1) 80 3,200 1.60 1,451

Before you load a pallet’s worth into a pickup, check the payload on your vehicle’s door-jamb label, split the load into trips, or pay for delivery. The weight per volume of the hardened slab is a different question, covered by the concrete weight calculator.

How much concrete does a pallet make?

A full pallet of 80 lb or 60 lb bags makes 25.2 ft³ of placed concrete, 0.93 cubic yard or 0.71 m³. A pallet of 40 lb bags makes 24 ft³ (0.89 yd³, 0.68 m³). So one cubic yard always needs a little more than one pallet.

Bag size Yield per bag (ft³) Bags per cubic yard Bags per pallet Pallets per cubic yard Pallet yield (yd³)
80 lb 0.60 45 42 1.07 0.93
60 lb 0.45 60 56 1.07 0.93
40 lb 0.30 90 80 1.13 0.89

Bags per yard is 27 ÷ bag yield, using the Quikrete Concrete Mix and Sakrete High-Strength data sheets. The 80 lb and 60 lb pallets come out identical because both carry 3,360 lb of the same mix. The 40 lb pallet carries 160 lb less, which is why it makes 1.2 ft³ less. Per square foot, one 80 lb pallet covers about 75.6 ft² of slab at 4 in thick (25.2 × 3), before any waste allowance.

How many pallets of concrete do I need?

Work out the bags first, then divide by the pallet count and round to whole pallets plus loose bags. One cubic yard is 27 ft³, so it takes 45 bags of 80 lb at 0.60 ft³ each, one pallet of 42 plus 3 bags.

Bags = volume (ft³) × (1 + waste) ÷ bag yield (ft³), rounded up
Pallets = bags ÷ bags per pallet (42 for 80 lb, 56 for 60 lb, 80 for 40 lb)

Project (4 in thick, +10%) Volume (yd³) (m³) 80 lb bags Pallets of 42 60 lb bags Pallets of 56 Mix weight, 80 lb bags
1 yd³ net (+10%) 1.10 0.84 50 1 + 8 bags 66 1 + 10 bags 4,000 lb (1,814 kg)
10 × 10 ft slab 1.36 1.04 62 1 + 20 bags 82 1 + 26 bags 4,960 lb (2,250 kg)
12 × 12 ft slab 1.96 1.50 88 2 + 4 bags 118 2 + 6 bags 7,040 lb (3,193 kg)
10 × 20 ft slab 2.72 2.08 123 2 + 39 bags 163 2 + 51 bags 9,840 lb (4,463 kg)
12 × 20 ft slab 3.26 2.49 147 3 + 21 bags 196 3 + 28 bags 11,760 lb (5,334 kg)
20 × 20 ft slab 5.43 4.15 245 5 + 35 bags 326 5 + 46 bags 19,600 lb (8,890 kg)

The calculator at the top of this page turns any number of cubic yards into bags of each size; divide its result by the pallet count above.

Worked example: 12 × 12 ft patio, 4 in thick

  • Volume: 12 × 12 × (4 ÷ 12) = 48 ft³; with 10% extra, 52.8 ft³ (1.96 yd³, 1.50 m³)
  • 80 lb bags: 52.8 ÷ 0.60 = 88 bags
  • Pallets: 88 ÷ 42 = 2.1, so 2 full pallets plus 4 bags
  • Weight to move: 88 × 80 = 7,040 lb (3.52 US tons, 3,193 kg), at least two pallet deliveries’ worth

Metric: a 3 × 3 m pad 100 mm thick is 0.9 m³, or 0.99 m³ (34.96 ft³) with 10% extra. That is 59 bags of 80 lb, 1.4 pallets, or about 2,141 kg of mix.

When is a full pallet worth it, and when is ready-mix better?

A pallet makes just under one cubic yard. Up to a pallet or two, bags are easy to buy and mix in batches; beyond that the bag count, mixing time and weight climb quickly. A 20 × 20 ft slab at 4 in is 245 bags of 80 lb, nearly 10 US tons of mix to lift twice: off the pallet and into the mixer.

At that size most people compare a bag order with a ready-mix delivery, which arrives as one placed volume. Bag strength is not the issue: Quikrete Concrete Mix and Sakrete High-Strength are both rated 4,000 psi at 28 days on their data sheets. See concrete psi for the code minimums by use.

Pallet counts for mortar and other bagged mixes

The same bag size usually means the same count. Quikrete’s Mortar Mix page lists 40 lb bags at 80 per pallet, 60 lb at 56 and 80 lb at 42, matching its Concrete Mix. Quikrete’s Fast-Setting Concrete Mix lists 64 bags of 50 lb per pallet.

Mortar bags cover a number of bricks or blocks, not a slab volume. For those quantities use the mortar calculator.

Common pallet-ordering mistakes

  • Assuming a pallet is a cubic yard. It is 0.93 yd³ for 80 or 60 lb bags and 0.89 yd³ for 40 lb; a yard needs 45 bags of 80 lb, not 42.
  • Forgetting waste. Add about 10% before dividing by the pallet count; spillage and an uneven base eat bags.
  • Overloading the truck or garage floor. 3,360 lb of mix sits on one pallet footprint. Check the payload label and where the pallet will be set down.
  • Mixing sizes on one job. 80 lb and 60 lb pallets make the same volume, but switching sizes mid-pour changes your batch water and count.
  • Ordering a full pallet for a small job. Ten fence posts or a short step may need a dozen bags; count first with the concrete bag calculator.

Pallet counts can change with packaging; the manufacturer’s current product page or your store’s order confirmation is the final word.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many 80 lb bags of concrete are on a pallet?

42. Quikrete lists its 80 lb Concrete Mix (No. 1101) at 42 per pallet, and Oldcastle APG lists Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix 80 lb at 42 EA/PAL. That is 3,360 lb of mix making 25.2 ft³ (0.93 yd³) of concrete.

How many 60 lb bags of concrete are on a pallet?

56. Quikrete's Concrete Mix page and Oldcastle APG's Sakrete High-Strength 60 lb listing both give 56 per pallet. At 0.45 ft³ per bag that is 25.2 ft³, the same volume and the same 3,360 lb as a pallet of 80 lb bags.

How much does a pallet of concrete weigh?

The bags alone weigh 3,360 lb (1.68 US tons, 1,524 kg) on an 80 lb or 60 lb pallet and 3,200 lb (1,451 kg) on a 40 lb pallet. Add the wooden pallet and wrap; ask the store for the shipping weight if your truck or floor has a limit.

How much concrete does a pallet make?

A pallet of 80 lb or 60 lb bags makes 25.2 ft³, or 0.93 cubic yard (0.71 m³), at the data-sheet yields. A pallet of 40 lb bags makes 24 ft³, or 0.89 yd³ (0.68 m³). None of them quite fills a full cubic yard.

How many pallets of concrete for a 10×10 slab?

About 1.5 pallets. A 10 × 10 ft slab 4 in thick is 33.3 ft³, or 36.7 ft³ with 10% extra: 62 bags of 80 lb, which is one full pallet of 42 plus 20 loose bags.

How many bags of concrete in a pallet for a cubic yard?

A cubic yard needs 45 bags of 80 lb (27 ÷ 0.60), so one pallet of 42 leaves you 3 bags short. With 60 lb bags it is 60 bags, one pallet of 56 plus 4. Add your waste allowance on top.

How many 50 lb bags are on a pallet?

Quikrete's Fast-Setting Concrete Mix (No. 1004) is listed at 64 bags of 50 lb per pallet on Quikrete's Lowe's product page, 3,200 lb of mix. Pallet counts are set per product and bag, so check the product you are buying.

Is a pallet of mortar the same count as concrete?

For Quikrete Mortar Mix No. 1102, yes by bag size: 40 lb bags 80 per pallet, 60 lb bags 56 and 80 lb bags 42, per Quikrete's product page. Mortar yields differ, so use the mortar calculator for quantities.
