FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate concrete for a round column or Sonotube?

Volume = π × radius² × height. A 12 in tube (0.5 ft radius) 4 ft tall holds 3.1416 × 0.25 × 4 = 3.14 ft³, about 0.12 yd³ or six 80 lb bags at 0.60 ft³ per bag (QUIKRETE 1101 data sheet).

How deep and wide should a fence post hole be?

QUIKRETE's post-setting guide says to make the hole 3 times the post diameter, set 1/3 of the post's overall length in the ground plus a 6 in gravel base, and put structural posts at least 6 in below the frost line.

How do I size footings?

These calculators work out the concrete volume for the footing size you enter. They do not design footings: width and depth depend on soil, loads and your local building code, so take dimensions from your plans or an engineer.

How much does a yard of concrete weigh?

Normal-weight concrete is about 150 lb/ft³ (WSDOT design memo), so one cubic yard weighs about 150 × 27 = 4,050 lb, a little over 2 short tons.
