FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much gravel I need?

Area in ft² × depth in inches ÷ 324 gives cubic yards. 200 ft² at 4 in is 200 × 4 ÷ 324 = 2.47 yd³. Multiply by your supplier's tons-per-yard figure to convert to tons.

How many tons are in a yard of gravel?

Loose gravel is typically about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, but it varies with stone size and moisture. Ask your supplier for their figure and enter it in the gravel calculator.

How thick should a gravel driveway be?

The UW–Madison PASER manual for gravel roads calls for a minimum gravel thickness of 6 in, and up to 10 in or more for heavy loads or poor soil.

How deep should a paver base be?

Oregon State University Extension recommends 4 to 6 in of crushed rock, thicker on soft clay or where the pavers will be driven on, placed in lifts and compacted between each.
